Jamie Hyneman,
LUT and a rapid prototype laboratory for students
Idea of having a prototype laboratory for LUT students has been around
for years. It was discussed by so many around the university, that it is a
genuine outcome of shared collective actions. For years it was a popular issue in
planning entrepreneurship studies, and for years it was successfully tested within
the existing resources in technology studies. There was a lot of enthusiastic
brainstorming and it was often mentioned that this prototype laboratory should
as well equipped as the famous workshop of the Mythbusters.
When the
complete renovation of LUT main building started in year 2015 there was an
agreement and plans for 330 square meter premises for this rapid prototype
laboratory. This required lot of planning and research, for example collecting
information and getting to know both national and international counterparts. Even
the concept was not entirely clear from the start it was known that it would be
unique and full of courage, a visible part of LUT Trailblazer strategy and an example
of never follow mentality. It will not be a normal laboratory or a normal
classroom. It will be something different.
Jamie
Hyneman was among the 14 highly esteemed persons awarded an honorary doctorate
by LUT in 2017. This sixth Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees at
Lappeenranta University of Technology took place in Lappeenranta on 15-16 June
2017. Jamie Hyneman and Mrs. Eileen Walsh arrived Lappeenranta on 13th
of June. During their stay at Lappeenranta Jamie was able to get familiar the
university and had for example sessions with LUT inventors, staff, projects, students,
entrepreneurship society LUTES and LUT spin-offs.
On Thursday
15th late afternoon, Jamie visited the construction site of the
rapid prototype laboratory. The idea was introduced to him and he was asked whether
he would like to be involved in planning and activities of that workshop. He
replied yes, and a new era started.
