Multifaceted whole of JHC

JHC will not only be a place with machines and tools. It is a place for students to meet, collaborate, create and test. Some courses will exploit the workshops. There will also be people and ideas from companies, inventors, and LUT staff.
In order to make all work smoothly, it is important to pay attention to many viewpoints:
-First of all, the workshop itself and all machines, tools and equipment needed in all different rooms of JHC.
- Health, safety and environmental issues are crucial and need to be taken into account from the very beginning of the planning
- Even though the place will be also for wild ideas, clear rules and guidance for working are needed
- There will be several ways and situations of communication about JHC
- A lot of people are needed to enable the fluent operation of the workshop, for example scheduling, record keeping, maintenance and storage issues
- Continuous material and waste flows need to be managed
- The quality management issues, such as databases of what has been done and by whom, possible close call situations etc. need attention also
- Last but not least is co-operation with companies, projects and individuals.

Excursion to M5 industries

Visiting Jamie Hyneman's workshop in San Francisco.

In between October and November we went on an excursion to Jamie Hyneman's company M5 industries. The trip was certainly worth two let lags!
Three full days we familiarized ourselves to different workshops: M5 industries (where Mythbusters was mostly filmed), Technoshop, and a FabLab located in a school. We met several people and heard a lot about how these workshops are operated, what should be taken into account, and what kind of opportunities there are.
